How to Convert IFC to glTF for 3D Viewing and AR
Turn your BIM model into a lightweight 3D file that works in web browsers, phones, and augmented reality apps.
glTF (GL Transmission Format) is the universal format for sharing 3D models on the web. It works in browsers, on phones, and in AR/VR apps. Converting your IFC to glTF lets anyone view the building model without BIM software.
Step-by-step conversion
- Upload your IFC file.
- (Optional) Run Optimize Model or Keep Physical Elements Only to strip out annotations and non-essential data. This makes the glTF file smaller and faster to load.
- Open the Export to 3D (glTF) tool.
- Click Run. BIMCamel generates a GLB file (binary glTF) that you can download.
What can you do with the glTF file?
- Embed it on a website using a 3D viewer like model-viewer or Three.js.
- Open it on a phone and walk around the model in AR.
- Share it with clients who do not have BIM tools installed.
- Import it into Blender or other 3D editing software.
Tips for best results
- Remove unnecessary detail before converting. A simpler IFC file produces a faster glTF.
- If the file is still too large, use Simplify to Boxes on non-critical elements before exporting.
