How to Reduce IFC File Size Without Losing Important Data
Large IFC files slow down every tool in your workflow. Learn how to shrink them by up to 90% while keeping the data you actually need.
If your IFC file is too large to email, upload, or open smoothly, you are not alone. BIM models often contain far more detail than any single task requires.
Why are IFC files so big?
Most of the size comes from detailed 3D geometry, material definitions, and property data that was added during design. When you share a model for coordination, clash checking, or quantity takeoff, much of that detail is unnecessary.
Step-by-step: reduce file size
- Upload your IFC file to BIMCamel.
- Open the Optimize Model tool. Pick a preset level (Light, Medium, or Aggressive) depending on how much you want to reduce.
- If you need even more reduction, use Simplify to Boxes to replace complex shapes with simple bounding boxes. This can cut file size by 90% or more.
- Use Remove Materials to strip colors and textures if you only need the geometry for coordination.
- Download your optimized file.
When to use each tool
- Sending a model by email? Use Optimize Model on "Medium."
- Preparing for a coordination meeting? Use Simplify to Boxes.
- Uploading to a lightweight viewer? Remove Materials first.
The original file is never changed. BIMCamel always creates a new copy, so your source model stays safe.
