How to Split an IFC Model by Floor or Building

Extract individual floors or buildings from a large model so each team gets only the data they need.

A single IFC file can contain an entire campus with multiple buildings and dozens of floors. That is powerful, but it also means the file is huge and hard to work with.

When splitting makes sense

  • A contractor only needs one floor for their scope of work.
  • A facility manager wants a separate file per building.
  • You need to send a lightweight extract to a consultant.

How to split

  1. Upload your IFC file.
  2. Open the Split Model tool.
  3. Choose how to split: by storey (floor), by building, by element type, or by a custom property.
  4. Click Run. BIMCamel creates one file per group.

Fixing storey assignments first

Sometimes elements are on the wrong floor because the original authoring tool assigned them incorrectly. Before splitting, open Manage IFC Storeys to review and reassign elements to the correct level.

After splitting, each file is a valid, self-contained IFC model that opens in any BIM viewer.
