Convert Revit RVT to IFC online: no Revit needed
Convert a Revit .rvt file to IFC online. Upload the file, pick the IFC version, and download the IFC. Nothing to install and no Revit licence needed. Levels, parameters, materials and Revit's own GlobalIds carry across.
Upload a Revit .rvt file, pick the IFC version, and download an IFC. The conversion runs on our servers, so you don't need Revit installed, a Revit licence, or a Windows machine. If someone sent you a Revit model and your tool only reads IFC, this is the whole job.
The IFC keeps what people use a Revit model for: each element as the IFC class Revit's own exporter would use, with the same GlobalId, on its level, with its parameters and its material colours. When the conversion finishes the result opens straight in the viewer next to the upload area, so you can check it before you download anything.
When to reach for it: When you have an RVT but not Revit, or you need an IFC for a tool that cannot read RVT. Files saved in Revit 2021 to 2027, up to 100 MB on a paid plan.
What you get: An IFC4, IFC4.3 or IFC2x3 file with Revit's GlobalIds, levels as storeys, parameters as property sets and material colours, opened in the viewer when the conversion finishes and available to download or save to your workspace.
Example: Hand an architect's Revit model to a contractor who only works in IFC, without asking for an export.
Why convert an RVT online
An RVT is Revit's own project format, and only Revit reads it. The usual ways out of it assume you own the software: open it in Revit and export IFC, or ask the author to export one for you. Each of those needs a licence, a Windows install, or someone else's time.
This tool takes the file itself. Nothing is installed on your side and nothing needs to be open on anyone's desktop. You upload the RVT, the server reads it and writes an IFC, and you download the result or keep it in your workspace. It works from a Mac, a Linux laptop, a locked-down office PC or a phone, anywhere a browser does.
What carries across into the IFC
The point of converting is to keep the information, not just the shapes. Every conversion keeps these, with nothing to switch on:
- Identity: each placed element gets the GlobalId Revit's own IFC export gives it, so issues, BCF topics and comparisons line up with IFCs exported from Revit. Its Revit category decides the IFC class, and its family and type become its name.
- Levels: Revit levels become IFC storeys, and each element is placed on its level.
- Parameters: instance and type parameters are written as IFC property sets, one per Revit parameter group, plus a Revit set with the element id, category, family, type and level.
- Materials: shapes come from the 3D graphics saved in the file and are coloured by their Revit material.
The settings, and what each one does
The panel on the left of the tool holds the one choice that changes the file: the IFC version. IFC4 is the default and what most tools read best. IFC4.3 is the newest schema, for platforms that ask for it, with the same geometry. IFC2x3 is for older software and writes larger files. Lengths are written in millimetres. Your choice is remembered for your next conversion.
See the result before you download it
The large area beside the settings does two jobs. Before a conversion it is the drop zone: drag an RVT onto it or click to choose one. After a conversion it is the viewer, and if "view result on completion" is on, the new IFC loads there on its own. Orbit it, open the model browser, click an element and read its parameters to confirm the conversion kept what you needed.
From there you can download the IFC, or, when you are signed in, save it to your BIMCamel workspace as a model so you can run the other tools on it: merge it with other disciplines, check it against an IDS, run clash detection, or export it to Excel. Saving is optional, and a result you do not save expires with the retention window of your plan.
Honest limits
Files saved in Revit 2021 to 2027 are supported; open an older file in a newer Revit and save it first. Geometry is written as meshes from the 3D graphics Revit saved in the file, not as parametric extrusions, so the IFC is not editable the way the Revit model is, and a few elements such as some door trims and light fittings can differ slightly from Revit's own export. The tool converts Revit projects (.rvt), not families or templates, and linked models are separate files. Revit files can be up to 25 MB without an account, 50 MB with a free one and 100 MB on a paid plan.
How to convert a Revit RVT to IFC online
- Open the converter and drop your .rvt on the large area, or click it to choose the file
- Pick the IFC version in the panel on the left: IFC4, IFC4.3 or IFC2x3
- Click Convert. Nothing is installed, and Revit is not needed
- Check the IFC in the viewer, then download it or save it to your workspace
Under the hood
BIMCamel parses IFC files in the browser using the open-source web-ifc engine and renders models with @thatopen/components + three.js. Heavy operations (clean / optimise / validate / convert) run on disposable server-side workers using the same web-ifc stack plus our own .NET pipeline; results stream back to your browser as soon as they're ready. Uploads sit on our servers only as long as your tier's retention window allows and are never used to train AI.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need Revit installed to convert an RVT to IFC?
No. The conversion runs online, on BIMCamel's servers. You upload the .rvt in your browser and download the IFC. You don't need Revit, a Revit licence or a Windows computer.
Which Revit versions are supported?
Files saved in Revit 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024, 2025 and 2026. If your file is older, open it in one of those versions, save it, and upload it again. The tool tells you which version a file was saved in when it can't convert it.
Does the IFC keep parameters and GlobalIds?
Yes. Each element keeps the GlobalId Revit's own IFC export gives it, and its instance and type parameters are written as property sets, one per Revit parameter group. Levels become storeys, and shapes are coloured by material.
What IFC version does it write?
IFC4 by default, or IFC4.3 or IFC2x3 if you pick one in the settings. IFC2x3 writes geometry as faces, so its files are 3 to 5 times larger than IFC4.
Is the RVT to IFC converter free?
Converting counts as one run against your daily allowance, the same as the other BIMCamel tools: 3 a day as a guest and 10 a day with a free account. Uploads are limited by the file-size cap of your plan. A paid plan raises both limits and puts your conversions ahead of free ones when the converter is busy.
How large can the RVT be?
Revit files can be up to 25 MB without an account, 50 MB with a free one and 100 MB on a paid plan. Larger models need more memory than the converter allows and stop with a clear message.
What happens to my file after the conversion?
The upload and the result are kept only for the retention window of your plan so you can download or save them, then removed. Guests get the shortest window. Save the result to your workspace if you want to keep it.
