How to View IFC Files Online — A Free Browser Alternative to Desktop BIM Viewers

Open and inspect IFC building models in your browser, exactly the way a desktop BIM viewer would. The viewer that backs the BIMCamel BIM platform — no installs, no licenses, works on any OS.

Opening an IFC file used to mean installing a heavyweight BIM viewer, waiting for a licence, and hoping your laptop could handle the geometry. BIMCamel drops that whole process. Upload the file, and a full 3D viewer opens in your browser.

Why view IFC in a browser?

  • No installation. Works on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, iPad, even an office laptop locked down by IT.
  • Zero cost. Free for guests and registered users alike.
  • Instant sharing. Send a colleague a link to the tool, tell them to drop the same file in, and you are both looking at the same model in under a minute.
  • Safe. Files are processed over HTTPS, stored in an isolated session workspace, and auto-deleted when your retention window ends — stream-only for guests, 7 days on a free account.

Step-by-step: view your IFC file

  1. Open BIMCamel in any modern browser.
  2. Drop your .ifc file onto the upload area on the home page.
  3. BIMCamel loads the geometry into the built-in 3D viewer. Rotate with the left mouse button, pan with the right, zoom with the scroll wheel.
  4. Click any element to see its type, name, IFC class, GUID, and every property attached to it.

What if the model is huge?

Very large IFC files (500 MB+, multi-discipline federated models) can take a while to parse in any viewer. Two quick fixes:

  • Run Optimize Model first. A "Medium" preset typically halves file size with no loss of information that matters for viewing.
  • For presentations or client reviews, run Export to 3D (glTF). The glTF output opens even faster and can be embedded on a website or opened on a phone in AR.

Inspecting without the 3D view

Sometimes you just need to know what is in a file — how many walls, what schema version, which storeys exist — without rendering geometry. IFC Viewer gives you a text summary of the model in seconds. Useful when you receive a file from a consultant and want to confirm it is actually what they said it was before you spend time loading it.

What the viewer supports

  • IFC2x3, IFC4, and IFC4x3 schemas.
  • Colours and materials from the original model.
  • Click-to-select with a full property panel.
  • Storey filtering so you can isolate a single floor.
  • Section planes for cutting through the model.

What the viewer is not

BIMCamel's viewer is for review, inspection, and coordination — not for editing geometry. If you need to change walls or route pipes, do that in your BIM authoring tool (or Blender + BlenderBIM) and re-export. BIMCamel handles everything that happens to the file after it has been exported: optimise it, clean it, merge it, validate it, compare it to the previous revision, or pull property data into Excel.

Common uses

  • A client wants to see the latest model but does not own any BIM software.
  • A contractor on site needs to check a detail from a phone or tablet.
  • A facilities manager wants to inspect the as-built IFC during handover.
  • A student is learning IFC and wants to see what a well-structured file looks like.

If you can open a URL, you can view an IFC file. That is the whole idea behind BIMCamel's online viewer.
