Clean IFC Drawing Layers
Remove 2D helper lines (centrelines, footprints, construction marks) that aren't needed for 3D viewing. Use the preset inside for one-click.
Remove the 2D helper geometry from an IFC model's elements — centrelines, footprints, axis lines, construction marks — while keeping the elements and their 3D bodies exactly as they are. A preset inside handles the common case in one click.
IFC elements can carry several representations at once: the 3D body you see, plus 2D shapes the authoring tool needs for drawing production. A wall might have a body, an axis line and a footprint. In a 3D workflow, only the body is ever rendered — but all three are parsed, stored and shipped, and in some viewers the 2D shapes draw as stray lines floating through the model.
When to reach for it: When your 3D view is cluttered with 2D helper lines — centrelines, footprints, surveyor marks, profile outlines, construction guides — that are stored in the IFC but serve no purpose in a modern viewer.
What you get: An IFC where the selected 2D helper layers have been removed from every element. The 3D geometry itself stays untouched.
Example: Strip surveyor marks, centre lines, and footprint outlines that clutter the 3D view.
Sub-element surgery, not element removal
This is the distinction that makes the tool worth having. Delete IFC Elements removes annotation OBJECTS — standalone dimension lines, text, symbols that exist as elements in their own right. This works one level down, inside elements you're keeping: the wall stays, its 3D body stays, its properties and GlobalId stay, and only the extra 2D representations attached to it are dropped.
So a model cleaned this way is identical in every 3D view and every data workflow, and smaller. Nothing that renders is affected, because what's removed is what wasn't rendering.
Symptoms it fixes
- Stray lines through the model in a viewer — usually axis or centreline representations being drawn by a tool that renders all representations rather than just the body.
- A larger file than the element count suggests, on models exported with full drawing support.
- Slow loading caused by parsing representations no 3D consumer will use.
- Confusing element trees where every element appears to carry several shapes.
Use the preset, or pick the classes
The preset covers the representations that are safe to remove for a 3D hand-off, which is what most people want and saves working out which representation identifiers matter. Scope by class when only part of the model should be affected.
Don't run it if the recipient needs drawing production out of this file — those 2D representations are exactly what a drawing workflow reads. If you need 2D output yourself, IFC to CAD Drawings generates real plans, elevations and sections from the 3D model rather than relying on the representations carried inside it. And as with every destructive tool here, the run writes a new file and leaves your original in place.
How to clean 2D drawing layers from an IFC model
- Upload your IFC file
- Click the 'Remove all 2D markers' preset button — or pick specific layers to remove
- Click Run
- Download the cleaner file
Under the hood
BIMCamel parses IFC files in the browser using the open-source web-ifc engine and renders models with @thatopen/components + three.js. Heavy operations (clean / optimise / validate / convert) run on disposable server-side workers using the same web-ifc stack plus our own .NET pipeline; results stream back to your browser as soon as they're ready. Uploads sit on our servers only as long as your tier's retention window allows and are never used to train AI.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my IFC show stray lines in the viewer?
They're 2D helper representations — centrelines, axis lines, footprints — that elements carry alongside their 3D bodies for drawing production. Viewers that render every representation rather than just the body draw them. This tool removes them.
Will this delete my walls or other elements?
No. The elements stay, along with their 3D bodies, properties, relationships and GlobalIds. Only the extra 2D representations attached to them are removed, so every 3D view and every data workflow is unchanged.
How is this different from deleting annotation?
Delete IFC Elements removes annotation objects — dimension lines, text, symbols that exist as elements in their own right. This works inside elements you're keeping, removing the extra representations attached to them. Different level, different tool.
Will it break drawing production?
Yes, if drawings are produced from this file — those 2D representations are what a drawing workflow reads. Don't run it on a model destined for drawing output. To generate 2D from the 3D model instead, use IFC to CAD Drawings.
Which representations does the preset remove?
The ones that are safe to drop for a 3D hand-off — the axis, footprint and construction geometry that no 3D consumer renders. It exists so you don't have to work out which representation identifiers matter; scope by class if only part of the model should be affected.
Which IFC versions are supported?
IFC2x3 and IFC4 — the two schema versions exported by essentially every AEC authoring application. IFC4x3, the infrastructure schema, works too: it opens in the viewer, and validation, health reports, property-set editing and georeferencing all run on it. Tools that need geometry processing, such as clash detection and 3D export, aren't verified on IFC4x3 yet.
What's the maximum IFC file size?
Up to 25 MB as a guest, 100 MB with a free account, 500 MB on Pro, and 1 GB on Team. The caps are on upload size only — every tool itself is available on every tier.
What happens to my file after processing?
Your file is uploaded over HTTPS and processed on our servers. Guest uploads are stream-only — the working files are deleted as soon as your download finishes. Free accounts keep results for 7 days; Pro and Team keep saved models until you delete them. Files are never shared with third parties or used to train AI.
Is Clean IFC Drawing Layers free?
Yes. Clean IFC Drawing Layers is free to use — guests get 3 runs a day with 25 MB uploads, and a free account raises that to 10 runs a day with 100 MB uploads. No trial clock, no watermarks.
Does Clean IFC Drawing Layers work on Revit or Navisworks files?
Not yet. It isn't offered for Revit files: it has nothing useful to remove: a converted model's only non-body geometry is the boxes that mark door and window openings. It isn't offered for Navisworks files: it has nothing to remove: converted Navisworks models contain only 3D body geometry. Export an IFC from Revit or Navisworks and use that instead.
